MEET BUNKIE – A 320 SQ FOOT CABIN BURSTING WITH CANADIANA STYLE!
Yesterday we featured the ‘before and after’ of Don & Patti Darling’s MAIN Cottage (if you missed it – click here.) After purchasing and renovating their main cottage, the Darling family turned their attention to building a second cabin for their guests.
‘Bunkie’ is a friendly A-frame structure with a personality all its own. As purposed guest quarters, Bunkie had to be welcoming and, most of all, fun! After the construction phase was all but completed, the Darlings invited Punch Inside to take creative liberty with the interiors. The warm neutral backdrop of the wood walls and floor allowed us considerable range when it came to colour and whimsical accessorizing. Take a look!
And be sure to take part in our ‘Share-to-Win’ contest! It’s simple. Just share this blog post through social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and your name goes in for a draw for these two (2) Jasmine OH! chairs designed by Karim Rashid for Umbra courtesy of TUCK STUDIO. Draw to take place on Thursday, September 3rd, 2015 at noon! As you scroll through the ‘after’ photography below you’ll see these chairs ‘in action’ (only in Surf Blue!)
BEFORE:
The Darlings built Bunkie from the ground up, an A-Frame structure that can sleep 6+ people. The cottage doesn’t have running water but has a composting toilet and a small kitchen area with electricity so guests can enjoy a morning coffee or a cold beer.

AFTER
“Bunkie” is now a charming retreat for guests and a quiet getaway for Don & Patti to escape the kids in the other cottage across the yard. Fresh and modern with a hint of rustic and a whole lot of personality!
The high gloss white cabinets and shelves are from Ikea offer a modern contrast to all of the natural wood in the space. Sudbury dining table by Gus* Modern, OH Chairs by Umbra. In the adjacent living room is the Jane bisectional from Gus* Modern and the Hub coffee table from Umbra. Ceramics on the dining table and coffee table by Darren Emenau. All furniture through Tuck Studio.
The kitchen area has a touch of retro flair with turquoise chairs from Umbra, a green shag mat from Chilewich, and some nostalgic kitchen accessories. These plastic OH Chairs can be stacked and taken outside on the patio for ultimate versatility. Furniture and rug through Tuck Studio. Artwork by Suzanne Hill.
The fun feature wall was a great place to integrate quirky accessories, greenery, and artwork. The Shadow Wall clock and Cubist Shelves are from Umbra and the artwork is a vibrant yellow silkscreen print by Carto Collective of the nearby city of Saint John where the Darlings live. The sofa and chair are both from the Jane series by Gus* Modern and the coffee and end table are from the Hub Collection by Umbra. Furniture, shelves, and clock through Tuck Studio. Cushions belonged to the Darlings.
If the inside of the cottage isn’t eye-catching enough, check out the view! (Pendant by Tuck Studio.)
The ceramics featuring illustrations of whimsical animals were made by Darren Emenau whose studio is less than a mile down the road of the Darling’s cottage.
A silkscreen print by Far Sky Map Works shows some provincial pride and a lemonade dispenser is a fun pop of yellow.
We integrated lots of plants in order to bring the outside in.
The steps up to the two upper beds double as storage and a simple rope banister adds a nautical touch.
One of the three double beds in Bunkie featuring a Llama cushion by Saint John’s own Wally and Roops.
Looking out from the top of the stairs guests see both the stunning view and the retro sputnik-style feature light. Lighting through Tuck Studio.
View from the top! Rugs by Chilewich, sofa, chair, and dining table by Gus* Modern, coffee table and end table, and dining chairs by Umbra. Furniture and rugs through Tuck Studio.
The fun continues onto the patio. These bright Haus planters and modern Cozi chair from Twist are as beautiful as they are durable. Available through Tuck Studio.
