Rug Talk: Mastering Rug Terminology

Here at Tuck, we LOVE rugs. So much so, that the second edition of our online magazine, TUCK IN: The Roll Out, is entirely centered around our one-of-a-kind curated Tuck Rug collection! Since the latest issue is scattered with rug lingo - words like "semi-antique" and "nomadic weaving" - we thought it would be helpful to break down all the rug terminology!

Semi-Antique Rug:

  • Roughly 20-50 years old and unaltered from its original state/design
  • Contain slight imperfections that add character and charm
  • Professionally inspected and cleaned

Nomadic Weave:

  • Shows distinctive patterns and colours to reflect nomadic life as well as unique weaving traditions to showcase the rug's heritage
  • Durable and eco-friendly, made with high quality materials using traditional techniques

Persian Rug:

  • Made with a double knotting technique that makes the rugs more durable
  • The doubling knotting allows for more detailed and complex patterns and images
  • The thick, plush feel from the double knotting makes them not just stylish but also comfy underfoot

Hand-Knotted Rug:

  • Created on a loom by hand, one knot at a time
  • Increased durability and value from high knot density and quality materials
  • Uniquely skilled level of detail and intricate craftsmanship

Something extra exciting about the rugs in this collection is that many of them are made with 100% wool. We’ve also loved incorporating sheep's wool in interior decor. In fact, it may be one of our favourite natural materials!

Top 5 Reasons Why We Love Wool For Rugs & Home Décor

1. Durability & Longevity

  • Wool has a higher wear resistance compared to other fiber materials, making wool rugs more resistant to foot traffic and more likely to keep their shape and design over time.

2. Plush & Cozy

  • Wool is a great insulator! Plus, it's plush and soft, helping to keep your feet warm and cozy during those colder months.

3. Hypoallergenic

  • Wool fibers are hypoallergenic, meaning they are relatively unlikely to cause allergic reactions for those who have sensitivities to different materials.

4. Sustainability

  • Wool is both a biodegradable and recyclable material! Because it’s a natural resource, it does not shed any microplastics. In fact, wool is one of the most sustainable fabric choices due to its renewable nature!

5. Unique Fiber Properties

  • Anti Odour: Wool fibers have unique properties that make them more odor resistant.
  • Absorbs Sounds: Wool boasts thermal and acoustic insulating characteristics.
  • Regulated Humidity: Wool is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air, and it can absorb more than 30% of its weight before it even starts to feel damp!
