Five Ways to Introduce Natural Materials in Your Home or Cottage!

If you’ve already had a chance to read through the first edition of our new online magazine: Tuck In captured  through Kelly Lawson’s stunning photography, you’ll likely have picked up on Judith’s love for the nature that surrounds her cottage on the Kingston Peninsula. Wherever your home or cottage is located, there’s an opportunity to bring natural materials into your space to create a texture-rich and cozy atmosphere. Here are five creative ideas and products to help you achieve an inviting cottage style in your space this summer. Additionally, we’ll be offering some alternatives and additions to suit different tastes and budgets!

1. Sheepskin Furniture and Faux Alternatives

Sheepskin is a timeless addition that adds warmth and texture to any space. We love the Timeout Reclining Chair & Ottoman from Conform, but if you’re looking for a faux alternative, here are a few options to keep you cozy all year around:

Kadon Chair: Cream shearling-like upholstery invites you to sit and stay a while.

Sedoni Chair:  Amber Lewis and Four Hands' Faux Mongolian fur offers plush seating with a thick, high pile.

Graham Chair: This classic high-back spindle chair is updated with plush faux Mongolian shearling fabric.

While these faux options are a fraction of the cost of the real deal, if you’re not ready to commit to a full sheepskin or shearling chair, add a hint of it with one of our Icelandic Sheepskin Chair Pads or Four Hands Lalo Lampskin throws.

2. Bring the Outdoors Inside with Found or Sentimental Objects

The natural patina of foraged items and antiques bring a sense of warmth and history, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Add your own charming treasures to make any room feel more personal and welcoming, as well as to help connect your cozy indoor space to other places you love! Here are a few ways that Judith used found, foraged and antique items in her cottage decor. 3. Rustic Décor

Enhance your decor with a unique piece made from natural materials like the Nette Lamp, constructed from natural woven Abaca. While this lamp is an absolute favourite of ours, you might also opt for one of these charmingly rustic pieces:

Chapati Rollers: Carved from reclaimed wood that gives a unique vintage feel

Lauren Lamp: A rattan shade brings warmth and an organic element to your space.

EQ3 Teak Stump: Made from reclaimed Indonesian teak tree trunks, these stumps make a useful and natural alternative for an end table.

4.  Layering Rugs

Layering rugs can create a rich, textured look that’s both cozy and stylish. You might add a jute rug for a natural, earthy tone, introduce a pop of colour with an intricately designed and constructed one-of-a-kind semi-antique rug or consider adding one of our faux cowhides from Loloi. And if you can’t decide, we’re a fan of mixing and matching a couple of styles!

Jute Rugs: Natural, organic materials and warm neutral tones are perfect for stand-alone or layering rugs

Tuck Rugs: These hand-selected one-of-a-kind hand-woven rugs are made from 100% wool and add rich colour and texture.

Cowhides: These durable rugs add a touch of rustic charm to your space.

5. Displaying Chopped Wood

Chopped wood isn’t just for burning; it can be a stylish and inexpensive decor element too! Here are just a few of the past Tuck Interiors projects in which we utilized chopped wood to add that special, organic touch:

Shawn's Mid Century Modern mantel

Natasha’s cozy music room log wall

Amanda & Adam's firewood arch

Not looking to commit to built-ins for your firewood? We also love using a magazine rack (like Judith did with the Aesop above) or basket to display kindling. To get really creative you could even flip the Gus Modern Timber Table upside down to store your firewood inside!
