Shopping for Bedroom Rugs? We can help!

Do you feel a bit lost when it comes to making decisons in your home? You aren't alone! There are many things to consider. Thankfully, we're here to help you make the right choices to create a thoughtful and well curated space.
This blog post will focus on how to choose the right area rug for your Bedroom with tips and tricks from a team who live, breathe, and eat design!
We're feeling inspired by our latest TUCK IN Issue, A Dreamy & Moody Bedroom! Our clients, Tracy & Julien, requested a serene and cave-like bedroom where they were sure to get quality sleep. To acheive this, we paired dark walls with dramatic wallpaper, soft luxury textiles, low lighting, and warm natural materials. Amongst these selections is a thoughtfully selected area rug, strategically placed beneath the bed and acting as a crucial element to ground the space.
Paired with the wallpaper, it was important that the area rug would not pull attention or compete with the other materials in the room. Opting for a deep blue with a clean geometric pattern, this rug was the ideal choice.

How to Choose an Area Rug for Your Bedroom
Does size really matter?
Choosing the right size is important when picking out a rug. As a general rule of thumb, you want your rug to extend at least 18" on either side of the bed and be visible from all sides. If you're someone who wants to step out of bed and onto a soft rug, it should be placed just in front of your nightstands, not under your nightstands.
If you'd prefer to have more of the rug visible and if space allows it, you can place the rug at foot of your bed leaving it completely exposed, similar to what we did in our client's home shown below.

Here's your general rule for rug sizes! Keep in mind, we LOVE breaking the rules!
- King: minimum 8x10'
- Queen: minimum 6x9'
- Double: minimum 5x8'
- Twin/ Single: 5x8' or a runner beside the bed
Placement
There are a number of ways to place rugs in your bedroom. Generally, the rug is beneath the bed, just slightly in front of the nightstands, extending no less than 18" on either side of the bed and the base of the bed. Depending on the size of your room and your bed, you may opt for a larger rug that fills more of the room. Alternatively, you can save money and place two runners on either side of the bed or a smaller rug at the foot of the bed. Here are a few examples of potential rug placements.

Material & Texture
Material and texture selection can be quite polarizing. Some love wool and natural fibres where other, prefer synthetic fibres. This can come down to allergies or just personal preference. A few things to consider when choosing a material:
- How does it feel? Typically bedroom rugs tend to be more plush, soft under foot, and comfortable.
- Do you have any pets? Some rugs, such as shag styles, are difficult to clean and may not be ideal for pets or even young children.
- Are allergies a concern? Natural fibres like wool or jute can trigger people with allergies. For those, it may be best to opt for a synthetic option.
