“Why Oh! October?” you ask?

From 2002 to 2007, nursing my parents through their final years, I spent too many hours to count in various rooms, floors and wings at both the Saint John Regional and St. Joseph’s.  Before they passed, my mom and dad were fortunate to share a hospital room together for one full year, which became referred to by all as ‘Bert and Mary’s Place.’

Until you find yourself immersed in the health care system – literally subject to its tender mercies – you probably can’t appreciate how precious and valuable is the care that your loved ones receive.  I spent years watching hundreds of health-care workers – nurses, doctors, specialists – provide the highest standard of care to my parents.  The quality and scope of that care went well beyond any standard set out in a job description.

With that personal history in mind, when the question “What should we do for our three year anniversary?” came up at TUCK STUDIO, it was immediately obvious to me that I had an obligation to look beyond any opportunity to capitalize on another ‘sale’ opportunity, to turn outward towards those in need in our community.

And there is one thing we know about our interior design clients and supporters of Tuck Studio:  they are a generous and intensely community-minded lot.  Moreover, scores of our clients work in various capacities at our hospitals and healthcare facilities.  So we saw this campaign as a way to both say thank you to them and support our community.  Knowing that the funds raised this evening will fund equipment, mental health, research, education and patient comfort at the Saint John Regional Hospital is the best way to celebrate our anniversary.

We salute each and every one of the 17 artists who gave so selflessly of their time and creativity to create works of art for this fundraiser. To Michelle Hooton and to Chef Markien, heartfelt appreciation for the gift of your culinary magic in dinner auctions.  To Mary Ann and Jamie at Shadow Lawn, such gratitude for sharing their Inn, a venue near and dear to many of us.  And I want to thank my team (Joshua Hayes, Christiana Myers, and Robert Moore) who continue to work so hard to pull this complex enterprise together, and most especially the SJRHF staff who work tirelessly to see this happen with us.

But perhaps most importantly, I thank you, you who have purchased, or will soon purchase, a ticket to attend and participate in this event – the same ‘you’ who’ll raise their bidding cards high in support of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation!  Thank you for sharing in our vision of OH! October! and for already making it such a success.
