Turning a New Build into a Beautiful Home: the Details that Complete It (Part 1)

Where We Started:

Creating a modern new build interior decor that feels truly soulful is a creative privilege we cherish at TUCK. Our work is defined by the lasting relationships that unfold over time. While some clients come in for a single piece, others return again and again. Consequently, they slowly become part of the story of the business itself.

This featured home belongs to one of those very special clients. We had already crossed paths a few times by December of 2017, when TUCK was still located across the street. Just before Christmas, he came into the shop looking for something special for his wife and left with a Moooi Blow Away Vase. For anyone who knows my deep love of Moooi, that purchase immediately caught my attention. Honestly, I remember thinking, these are our people.

Over the years that followed, they have been the kind of clients every entrepreneurial team hopes for — loyal patrons who continue to support a local business year after year. Sometimes they stop in and fall in love with a decorative piece on the floor. Other times they invite us into their home to help redesign and decorate an entire room or two in their beautifully built house.

What has grown over the past nine years is something we value deeply: trust, collaboration, and a shared love of thoughtful interiors.

We adore them, we adore their home, and we truly adore their two, four legged boys!  We’re so pleased to finally share a glimpse of it here.

The photographs in this feature were captured by Kelly Lawson, whose ability to translate a lived-in space into something quietly cinematic never ceases to amaze us.

Modern new build interior design - Moooi Vase

As you enter the front doors of this newly built home in Quispamsis, you’re immediately greeted by a dramatic double-height great room. Since the clients already owned the artwork and wall baskets, our goal was to introduce grounding pieces. We wanted to anchor the opposing walls while allowing their existing collection to shine.

Specifically, two beautiful oak furnishings from Ethnicraft — a console and a bench — provide that foundation. These pieces add warmth, scale, and balance to the space. Additionally, the console offers the perfect moment to showcase the Moooi Blow Away Vase. Interestingly, this is the very piece he chose for his wife years ago, and it still looks stunning in their new home.

A Cozy Home Office Design:

Because both she and her husband work non-traditional schedules, creating a cozy yet modern interior design in this office was a must. She already owned the gorgeous Nest artwork by Ryan Livingstone. Consequently, we essentially built the entire room around that remarkable piece.

As you’ll see throughout this home, the clients have developed a real love for Ethnicraft — beautifully crafted, timeless furnishings that bring a calm, grounded feeling to a space. We introduced several of these quietly elegant pieces to create a strong foundation for the room, then layered in soft blues and greens to keep the palette relaxed and restorative.

The wallpaper wasn’t originally on our client’s radar, but once she saw the room come together, it was an immediate yes. In fact, it sparked what has now become a bit of a wallpaper obsession — something you’ll notice repeated throughout their home.

The principal bedroom sits at the back of the house, where beautiful sunlight pours into this quiet corner. Once again, the clients’ love for Ethnicraft pieces carried through. They selected simple, elegant furnishings that provide generous wardrobe and dresser storage.

Even though the core pieces come from the same collection, this room redefines the idea of a traditional matching set. The craftsmanship and understated design elevate the look. As a result, the space feels cohesive without feeling predictable. Finally, by layering a gorgeous bench and soft lighting, the room takes on a calming, spa-like atmosphere.

Open Concept Great Room, Kitchen & Dining:

Next, we move into the great room. This is a beautiful space that streams with sunshine throughout the afternoon. This area highlights our approach to modern new build home interior decoration.

The design began with the clients’ gorgeous leather sofas. These anchor the room and set the tone for everything that followed. Since they have two beloved furry family members — a Frenchie and a Pug — durability was important. Therefore, they selected a beautiful leather that easily stands up to everyday wear and tear.

Symmetry also plays a key role in this space. On either side of the fireplace, the sofas are balanced by a pair of Baltic chairs. Together, they create a welcoming seating group around the rattan and glass coffee table. Moreover, the area rug ties the room back to the entrance while complementing the dining area beyond.

From here, we move into the kitchen and dining area. Like the great room, these spaces flow openly into one another. They serve as the heart of the home where the family spends most of their time together. Because our clients naturally lean toward a minimalist aesthetic, the openness continues here. Clean lines and light finishes allow the rooms to feel airy and effortlessly functional.

Powder rooms are one of my favourite spaces to design. In many ways, they are a wonderful challenge. Since they are typically small, there is just enough room to wash your hands and exit. Because of that, I often like to use the walls to completely transform the experience.

In this case, we chose a mural that draws the eye inward. This trick of the eye makes you believe there is an entire world beyond the wall. Filled with delicate birds and sweet animals, it brings charm and a little surprise to the house.

This brings us to the end of Part 1 of our tour, where we’ve explored the beautifully layered main floor of our clients’ home. We hope this modern interior decor tour inspired you!

In Part 2 (coming next week) we’ll head upstairs and downstairs to reveal even more thoughtful spaces, including a cozy family room, two guest washrooms, another beautiful office, and my personal favourite — our client’s home gym.

Stay tuned as the story of this remarkable home continues.
