What We’re Loving: Vibrant velvet in rich jewel tones!

Lately we’ve rekindled our relationship with velvet. We’ve always been drawn to it but have fallen even deeper in love with the possibilities presented when the softness of velvet is paired with beautiful jewel tones.

What is velvet? Historically, velvet was made using only the finest silk fibres. The silk and the production method meant velvet was only available to the very wealthy and was certainly a status symbol. Today, with technological improvements and the introduction of synthetic materials, velvet is more cost effective without compromising quality or appearance.

Unlike any other fabric, velvet has a unique 3-dimensional appearance, woven from 3 types of yarn: the group, the warp, and the pile. These yarns are woven between 2 supports (imagine top and bottom) and then split with a fine blade in the middle revealing 2 mirrored finished fabrics.

This method gives velvet its 3D texture, changing as you move around it and light reflects off the fibres in different ways. This movement is so inviting, the urge to touch the fabric is irresistible. The way it changes as you brush it with your hand is mesmerizing.

Why we’re rediscovering our love for velvet?

While we’ve always been a tad obsessed with the fabric, a reason for this rekindling is a new line of fabrics from Canadian furniture manufacturer, EQ3. The fabric line, Seoul, is a collection of 6 fabrics made of 82% polyester and 12% cotton. The use of polyester, instead of the traditional silk used for velvets, means a more durable fabric that is easier to clean and has a lower price tag.

The specific fabric that we can’t get enough of is EQ3’s Seoul Jade fabric which we’ve used to upholster an EQ3 Arie Chair and ottoman as well as as 2 EQ3 Lima Counter Stools in our new live/ work space, The Loft, across from Tuck on Prince William Street.

Light reflecting off the velvet makes the already incredibly comfortable Arie chair look even more inviting! Who could resist the temptation to sit in this chair?

After seeing the Arie chair, we were hooked! Which is why we decided to order x2 of the EQ3 Lima Stools in Seoul Jade/ Walnut ($399) which are the perfect compliments to our soapstone countertops, black cabinets, and brass accents.
