Welcome Tuck’s Newest Team Member, Ellen Kelly!

We’re very happy to introduce the newest member at Tuck, Ellen Kelly! Ellen started working with us nearly one month ago and we can honestly say it feels as though she’s been with us since the very beginning.

After teaching in Japan for the past three years, Ellen felt she needed a change of pace. With her husband, James, she decided she wanted to be closer to family in the Maritimes. With Saint John’s beautiful architecture, eclectic food scene, and strong sense of community, Ellen knew this is where she wanted to hang her hat.

Ellen is our new Customer Service & Sales Associate at Tuck and already she has rocked the position. Being of service to our clients is always our #1 priority and to Ellen, it comes naturally. Kind, welcoming, and cheerful are three words that come to mind. We’re so pleased to have her on our team. Her energy and positive attitude has been a great addition.

Stop by Tuck to meet Ellen in person and read on for a Q&A to learn a bit more about her.

Q & A With Ellen Kelly

1.  If you had to take one album to a deserted island, what would it be?

A: This is so hard! After a lot of thinking, I’d have to go with “Random Access Memories” by Daft Punk. If I was alone on this deserted island, I don’t think I’d want an album that would make me miss anyone…I’d want an album that would make me want to dance!

2. What is the best book you’ve read in the last year?

A: “Educated”, by Tara Westover. If you haven’t read it, do it! I’m currently reading “Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell” and it’s fascinating. I’m trying to listen to the albums as they come up in the book and it helps to understand the context in which her songs were being written in conjunction with where she is at in her life. Knowing the story behind my favourite Joni Mitchell songs just makes me love her even more. Is that even possible?

3.  What food do you avoid at all costs?

A: 3 years ago I would have said all seafood but it seems that there is no avoiding that in Japan! I tried all kinds of food I didn’t think I’d like but ended up loving, like fugu, which, if prepared improperly, can be deadly! But the one thing I tried and now will avoid at all costs is ikura, also known as salmon roe. It’s just…gross. You can’t undo that experience.

4.   What is the best part about being a newcomer to Saint John?

A: The best part about being a newcomer to Saint John is seeing how much Saint Johners love their city and how they embrace their community. I think when a group of people are providing opportunities to be better, it encourages us to stop and question how we live. Saint John’s local businesses are setting standards by sourcing Canadian-grown, ethically-made, and/or environmentally-friendly goods, which allows us to be conscious consumers. It can be difficult to break habits of hyper-consumerism, but I feel excited about the efforts going on in our city and it feels that with peoples support, anything is possible. And isn’t that what community is all about?

Also, living down (up?) the street from my sister-in-law and cousin is pretty great, too!

5.  If you had to give one piece of advice to your 10 year old self, what would it be?

A: At the age of 10 my family moved from Saskatchewan to Northern Ontario and everything was so new and different. I would have been in Grade 5 and my French immersion teacher was very critical about the way I spoke French. Unfortunately, his judgements have had some lasting effects. So I would have told my 10 year old self this: “The way you speak French is fine! It’s a little different than the way your peers speak French, but it’s endearing and it’s you! Don’t let someone’s opinion of your accent stop your desire to learn. Be proud of where you come from. And remember, if someone doesn’t like something about you, it says more about them than it does about you.”
