Joshua spent his early years in Red Head on Anthony’s Cove. Coming of age a few minutes from the Bay of Fundy, Joshua developed an addiction to the smell of salt water and seaweed. “There’s nothing better than spending the day at the beach, swimming and looking for hidden treasures such as rare cobalt blue sea glass.”  After graduating from Saint Malachy’s Memorial High School, he immediately enrolled at UNBSJ.  After one year of study, he succumbed to the siren’s song of Interior Decorating and transferred to Algonquin College in Ottawa.  During the two years of Algonquin’s program – from which he graduated with honours – Joshua studied interior finishes, perspective drawings, Auto CAD, accessorizing, furniture layout, and space planning.

During his time studying in Ottawa, Joshua worked for the Canadian Furniture and Accent store, EQ3. His experience at EQ3 introduced him to products by Herman Miller, Marimekko, and Alessi. Working so close with beautiful modern and contemporary furniture was an inspiration:  “Although I don’t fancy myself a furniture maker and I am not a ‘DIY’ person, I have a strong appreciation for well made furniture and the process that a company uses to take a design from paper to product.”

After being away from friends and family for so long, Joshua decided to come back to Saint John to begin his career. Once he’d spent a little time getting reacquainted with his beloved Bay of Fundy, Josh – an early admirer of the style and aesthetic of Punch Inside and Tuck Studio – decided it was time to reach out to Judith to meet with her.

Joshua’s favourite design-related quotation is Oscar Wilde’s “Life is too important to be taken seriously.”  He tries to incorporate the spirit of Wilde’s dictum into every space he designs.  In terms of sourcing ideas for those designs, Joshua feels that the best source for what’s new and innovative in interior design is fashion: “Fashion is typically a step ahead of Interior Design so what is happening now in fashion, you can expect to see in interiors very soon.”
