One Living Room, Two Concepts! Bright & Colourful vs. Neutral & Rugged. Which do you prefer?

Which is why we often come up with a few variations of a single rooms design. That way we can identify which route is best or even pull from both to create a mix.
Today, we’re sharing two different design concepts for one Living Room! The first is bright and colourful and the second is neutral and rugged.
Through the use of different furniture and accents, we worked within the same layout and parameters to come up with two very different concepts. Our requirements were:
-Custom built-ins for a fireplace, TV, and display
-Large Sectional
-Two Chairs
-Coffee Table
-End Tables
-Floor Lamp
-Area Carpet
-Misc. Decor & Accents
We began by designing built-ins to provide ample closed storage below, open shelving for books, and a large enough space for a big screen TV. Additionally, we chose an inset electric fireplace for the right section of the built-ins.
When we had the built-in design nailed down, we began to select the other elements for the room and created two different concepts focused around the same layout. Here is what we came up with. For the first Living Room Concept, we went with a bright and colourful pallet with a Gus* Modern Jane Bi-Sectional in Stockholm Cobalt being the most prominent element. We paired the sectional with two Gus* Carmichael Chairs in Huron Ivory and accessorized with gold accents and a vibrant area carpet. [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”31979″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]We’re huge fans of Jane! This sectional is timeless in any fabric. The button tufting is just one of the many features we love about the Gus* Modern Jane Bi-sectional. It has been cleverly designed so that it can be configured with the chaise on the left or the right. Even in the bright Stockholm Cobalt Fabric, this sectional will never go out of style. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31921″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text] We wanted to choose a chair that would compliment the Jane Bi-sectional so the Gus* Carmichael chair was the obvious choice! Perfectly tailored with clean lines, a tight upholstered back, and solid wood legs. We chose the Huron Ivory Fabric to keep things bright and airy. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31965″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]We wanted to maintain a classic and timeless style so we chose marble and brass accents on the coffee tables and end tables. The sleek styling of the Corbett coffee table is perfect to show off the area carpet beneath. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31922″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Softening things up, we selected round side tables in brass/ marble. One between the arm chairs, and one beside the sectional. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31923″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]
Timeless and classic, the Loren LQ-10 area carpet offers a vintage hand-knotted look and provides a textured effect but it’s completely brand new! The blue accents the colour of the sectional.

The EQ3 Drum Floor Lamp is a great option for this Living Room concept with its soft white fabric shade, white metal stem, and sleek marble base.
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31933″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]We selected Céragrès Memory cements tiles to accent the fireplace and add a bit of pattern, from Tuck. Memory cement tiles are handcrafted, which gives them their one-of-a-kind look. The collection features 3 colour-ways and 3 different patterns. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31935″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]Living Room Concept Number Two: Neutral and Rugged
For the second Living Room Concept, we chose to go with a neutral and soft pallet with dark materials for a rugged aesthetic. In this version, we started with the very comfortable Gus* Modern Parkdale Bi-Sectional in Vintage Mineral, paired with the Gus* Embassy Chairs in Saddle Brown Leather. We accessorized with a solid wood live edge coffee table, powder coated side tables, and a relaxed and rugged area carpet. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31980″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]For this iteration of the design, we chose the Gus* Modern Parkdale Bi-Sectional in a dark fabric, Vintage Mineral. The Parkdale features plush seat and back cushions which contain eco-friendly synthetic-down fill, derived from recycled PET plastic! [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31953″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Nothing says rugged more than a stunning leather armchair, like the Gus* Modern Embassy Chair in Saddle Brown leather. This beautiful chair conveys a classic, mid-century style with tailored proportions and refined details. It features a button-tufted, tight back design with piping details throughout, and seat cushions filled with a luxurious feather blend. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”21751″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]This Living wouldn’t be complete without a live edge coffee table! We chose this one with a solid seared oak top and sleek matte black steel legs. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31941″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]A bit on the lighter side, we paired the live edge coffee table with these powder coated steel Trica Tam Tam side tables. It’s important when going with a more rugged aesthetic to not get carried away with large heavy furniture. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31948″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]
Masterfully hand-woven, the Holloway Rug for Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines brings warm neutrals to life with quality craftsmanship. Full of textural detail and finished with a generous fringe, Holloway features a blend of wool, cotton, and nylon.
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31973″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]The EQ3 Axle Floor Lamp features a simple pine wood tripod base, a black fabric shade, and white metal accents. [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31944″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]For this version, we chose large scale Céragrès tiles from the White Experience collection. This marble effect collection is classic and contemporary. We chose the Pulpis matte 24″ x 48″ variation for a natural appearance. White Experience tiles are available in various sizes and finishes. [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=”31955″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]White Experience Finishes & Colours [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”31956″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large” qode_css_animation=””][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern” css_animation=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]We hope we’ve inspired you with our two Living Room concepts!
