Before & After: A Mini Cottage Makeover

We’re very fortunate to have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects at Tuck from entire home renovations to individual room makeovers. Early Summer 2018, Katie dropped into the store with pictures of their recently purchased cottage in Perth-Andover!  Through a few minutes discussion and a walk through the store, we quickly were able to pull a design plan together to help Katie and Joey refreshen their cottage with a few furnishings and decor items!

Before

For a small cottage, it’s used for large gatherings! Katie & Joey spend most of their summer weekends and holidays here along with their friends and family. The focus for this mini-makeover was to brighten the open layout: dining, kitchen, and the living area while maintaining the comfortable and relaxed feel of the cottage. Here is what the cottage looked like before.

AFTER

Before moving into the after photos, we’d like to thank Katie & Joey for allowing us to be a part of this fun mini makeover!

We whipped together a very small design board to show the look/feel of the main items we were recommending to put into the cottage.  They planned on keeping their own sofa, but we threw in our Gus* Modern Flipside Sofa as it was close to the same fabric/ size.

Tip: If you’re working on a DIY Home Makeover or renovation, organize your ideas using simple computer software such as Powerpoint. Copy/ Paste images of the products you would like to purchase and any other items you would like to incorporate into your room onto one slide. Seeing everything grouped together will help you visualize the space.  When sourcing products online, be sure to visit the Tuck Shop page for links to our exclusive partners and products. Call us, (506) 642-9692, or email hello@tuckstudio.ca for pricing and information.

Our first recommendation was to change the walls to our TUCK STUDIO signature white! We used Benjamin Moore Oxford White CC-30. The walls, ceiling, trims, and baseboards all received a fresh coat of paint. Painting everything the same colour allows the space to feel more spacious, rather than accentuating the halfway point where the wainscotting remained.

In the Living Room, we opted for a contrasting and impactful Cole & Son wallpaper, Aqcuario. This wallpaper served as the jumping off point for the room. There is a lot of fishing done at this cottage, and we couldn’t resist a playful tone!  We mixed in soft greys, charcoals, natural woods, and accented everything with a classic Lucca Area Carpet.

The wallpaper in the Living Room from Cole & Son, part of the Fornasetti collection, Acquario 97/10048is available from Tuck Studio. The whimsical composition and scale of Acquario creates a unique and striking wallcovering.

Wood floors were installed throughout the cottage to compliment the new furniture and design. The light natural finish keeps the space open and airy.

SLAB Wood From the Hood Custom Coffee Tables & End Tables were the perfect option for Katie & Joey’s cottage. These live edge tables are made using mature ash, birch, and maple trees grown in New Brunswick. The collection is part of a collaboration between Tuck Studio and JD Irving. The dining area is open to the living room. We chose the EQ3 Harvest 63″ Dining Table. If they need to accomodate more seating, Katie & Joey can easily add the two 18″ extension leaves to either end of the table.

In addition to being extendable, the solid oak top and natural oiled finish means this table can double as a butcher block. Use it to chop, cut, and prep meals. The table may scratch and mark over time but we think that’s part of the charm!.

The chairs we chose for around the dining table are the Gus* Modern Thompson Chairs with natural oak legs and black vinyl seats & backs. Comfortable, durable, and stylish! What more can you ask for in a dining chair? Available with Walnut or Natural Oak legs and White or Black Vinyl seats.
