Ustation Before and After Blog

Ustation | Before & After of a Proudly Curated Shared Space in the Heart of Saint John

Nearly a year ago, we were approached by long time client Jeff Roach and his business partner Glen Hicks about their most recent business venture, Ustation. A proudly curated shared space with a variety of independent and small group work areas, personal amenities, and beautiful things to look at, just like the grand Union Stations of our past.

The space selected to be the first Ustation in Canada is conveniently located just a stone’s throw from Tuck Studio on Prince William Street. We knew straight away that Ustation would be a go-to destination for working professionals throughout the city, and we are so thankful to be a part of the space’s transformation.

Why the name Ustation?

The name pays homage to the historic Union Station, a train station which was located where Saint John’s Harbour Station now stands. Union Station was built in 1933 and demolished in 1973. Below is a photo, taken in 1968 by  Ian MacEachern.

Interested in learning more about Saint John? Pick up a copy of The Lost City: Ian MacEachern’s Photographs of Saint John, in which architectural and social historian, John Leroux, has selected seventy-five black-and-white photographs drawn from MacEachern’s exceptional archive and written an accompanying essay that examines the recent history of Saint John and the effect of urban renewal on civic architecture, historic neighbourhoods, and community structure. Copies available at Tuck Studio for $35.

Ustation is inspired by that big open space in every Union Station in every important city referred to as The Concourse. It’s the big room with often grand ceilings and proud architectural details where everyone crosses paths and every competing rail line resides, offering their services side by side.

Before

Here is the space before Ustation moved in. Located on Prince William Street with windows overlooking the Saint John Harbour, the space housed countless business for over 140 years.

After

We love sharing the after photos from all our projects. Of course, before we get into the after photos from Ustation, there are a few people we’d like to thank.

General Construction: Saint John Servicemaster
Paint:  DC Specialty Contracting
Custom Table Tops: Artizan Group
Ustation Art Installation: Chris Lloyd
Carpet Tiles: Wacky’s Flooring/ Commercial Carpet Centre
After Photography: Kelly Lawson
Branding: Bonfire

A special thank you to Jeff Roach & Glen Hicks for allowing us to be a part of this wonderful transformation! It has been an absolute pleasure working with you both.

Now, on to the after photos. Out of respect of the history of the 140-year-old building, we chose to preserve the space as much as possible keeping the walls, ceiling, and floors. We installed some modern details, brought in modern furniture, added new lighting, and incorporated some pops of colour with paint, artwork, and carpet tiles.

The only painted wall in the space is this dark feature wall painted Benjamin Moore Twilight Zone 2127-10, which acts as a back drop for a wall mounted TV and an Umbra Flora Link installation.

The lower section of the space features Gus* Modern Mix Modular seating, perfect for anyone who prefers to work in absolute comfort. Nothing in the space, not even the custom planter, is fixed to the floor. This allows Glen & Jeff to rearrange the room however they wish to suit their needs.

We commissioned artist, Chris Lloyd, for this painting in the style of his latest series of “Map Paintings”, derived from Google Maps locations. Selected geographic areas from Saint John and surrounding areas are paired with a word or phrase, in this case Union Station, which is integrated into the texture and pattern of the painted map image. Through these works, Chris attempts to draw connections between physical places with less tangible thoughts and memories, using a colourful and playful palette to emphasize form, composition and pattern.
