15 Aug Exciting news on behalf of Third Space Gallery – GALA-VANT announced!
As an original founding member of Third Space Gallery back in 1997 (originally christened “The Space: A co-op Gallery”), I was pleased to be asked by its current Programming Chair, Jacqueline Collomb, to be involved with the planning and execution of the gallery’s most ambitious fundraiser to date, GALA-VANT!. I am also pleased to report that the team working on this event has proven itself a well-0iled engine of invention and tirelessness. If I’m any judge of these things, this event will ROCK! (Thanks Barb Crawford, Sarah Tapley, Jessica Vihvelin, Gillian Goldie, Holly Singh, Alice Fudge, Jacqueline Collomb and Erin Caines)
You can glean all the event details in the press release below, or see the attached poster, but the most important thing you need to know is that you don’t want to wait to purchase your tickets for what promises to be a spectacular Saint John evening. The party takes place in a large decorated tent in the parking lot next to Thandi’s! Our generous hosts, Holly and Ken Singh, will be closing their restaurant to hold this fundraiser. The central event of the evening will be both a live and silent auction by Tim and Liz Isaac featuring works by the region’s top artists (check out who on the poster!) plus a fabulous trove of gifts, etc., donated by local businesses. But the evening’s highlight will definitely be the unveiling of 8 new murals of Famous Saint Johners by artist Sara Griffin, a gift to the city from the Singhs. Rounding out the evening’s rich assortment of festivities will be live entertainment, heaps of delicious food, and a visit by our honorary guest, Fred Ross.
Suggested attire is swanky…with a flourish of artsy fartsy.
All monies raised will go to the operating funding of the Third Space Gallery, the only artist-run centre in Saint John. And they pay artist fees!

SAINT JOHN – Friday, August 16th 2013
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: THIRD SPACE GALLERY INVITES SAINT JOHN TO CELEBRATE AND SUPPORT THE ARTS AT ITS INNAUGURAL FUNDRAISER: GALA-VANT!
Third Space Gallery and Thandi Restaurant are proud to present GALA-VANT, a black tie fundraiser for Saint John’s only artist-run centre for contemporary art.
Hosted and catered by Thandi’s, GALA-VANT promises to be an exciting event with a live and silent auction hosted by Tim and Liz Isaac, featuring works by some of the region’s preeminent artists. Speaking of which, the evening’s honourary guest is our own Fred Ross.
Third Space is proud to welcome Master of Ceremonies, Hance Colbourne, CBC’s Information Morning Host to lead us through the exciting evening.
GALA-VANT will feature the unveiling of the revamped “famous folk” murals currently occupying the east wall of Thandi’s by visual artist Sara Griffin. Holly and Ken Singh commissioned Grand-Manan based artist Sara Griffin to give the portraits of famous Saint Johners (Walter Pidgeon, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Miller Brittain, Donald Sutherland and Louis B. Mayer) a complete makeover, and to create two new portraits: of visal artist Fred Ross and pioneering female pilot Daphne Paterson.
“Holly and Ken Singh exemplify what it means to be invested citizens and members of the business community who recognize the value of public art and are committed to supporting the arts in Saint John,” said Mayor Mel Norton. “Organizations like Third Space Gallery make our city the dynamic and creative entity it is. The famous folk portraits in particular drive an understanding and appreciation of some of the individuals who were shaped by, and in turn helped shape, the city of Saint John.”
“As a not-for-profit, artist-run centre, Third Space Gallery provides access to contemporary artwork in a free and public setting,” said Shawna Waterall, President of Third Space Gallery. “This fundraiser is immensely important in helping Third Space Gallery maintain programming which showcases the work of contemporary artists, from near and far, in Saint John.”
Third Space Gallery is committed to representing local, regional and national professional contemporary artists (and is one of the few that pays artist fees). All funds raised at GALA-VANT will go towards future programming. Third Space Gallery is pleased to partner with founding Gallery member, Judith Mackin, to co-chair the event.
GALA-VANT will take place September 14, 2013 in the restaurant and under a large tent beside Thandi Restaurant, 33 Canterbury Street, from 7-11 pm. Tickets are available at TUCK Studio, Thandi Restaurant, and Backstreet Records. Tickets are $100 apiece and include a one-year membership to Third Space Gallery.
(Existing members $75 apiece)
